What Are the RoHS Compliance Requirements for Voltage Products?

Voltage protectors and regulators, collectively referred to as voltage products, are important to ensure the safety and reliability of the operations of electrical equipment. They are utilized to protect against fluctuations, surges, and dips that may lead to damage to sensitive devices, as well as other problems.

Thus, when shopping for these equipment around, it is crucial for you to find them bearing the RoHS certification. Distinct from other certifications like CE marketings, RoHS ensures the product does not contain hazardous materials. Learn about the various electronics RoHS compliance requirements in this guide that will tackle the following:

– What is RoHS certification?

– What are the requirements?

What Are RoHS Certifications?

RoHS certifications, or Restriction of Hazardous Substances, as its name implies, signify and certify that products, such as those used for voltage regulation, comply with every regulation present that restricts the use of hazardous materials from production to actual use. You will learn more about these hazardous elements as you read further.

The RoHS certification aims to, therefore, reduce the environmental and health risks associated with these harmful materials, primarily by limiting, up to the point of eradicating their presence in those manufactured goods.

Which Products Are Covered Under RoHS?

The following products must comply with this EU regulation, lead-free certification or RoHS:

  • Industrial equipment
  • Automotive electronics
  • Lighting products
  • Consumer electronics
  • Telecommunications equipment
  • Medical devices
  • Household appliances
  • Toys and recreational goods, and the like

What Are the Products Exempt From RoHS Compliance?

However, if you find yourself reading this discussion but realize the products you offer belong to this list below, know that they are exempt from getting the RoHS certification:

  • Military equipment
  • Products integral to non-covered equipment
  • Large-scale tools and installations
  • Solar panels
  • Means of transport, such as motorcycles
  • Non-road mobile machinery
  • Research and development
  • Pipe organs
  • Active implantable medical devices

Yet, from the entrepreneurial perspective, note that since most businesses would offer the products from the first list, they are more likely to be required to secure RoHS compliance.

The RoHS Compliance Requirements for Voltage Products

There are three crucial steps to remember on your way to getting your products to be RoHS-compliant: knowing the hazardous chemicals restricted, the testing requirements, and the labeling requisites.

1. The Hazardous Materials

To be RoHS-compliant, it is a nitty-gritty of steps for manufacturers. You must ensure that none of these chemicals or materials are found in your products:

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Cadmium
  • Hexavalent Chromium
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalat
  • Benzyl Butyl Phthalate
  • Dibutyl Phthalate
  • Diisobutyl Phthalate

All of those are deemed harmful and may endanger the lives of individuals using your products, should they be present. For instance, a certified RoHS stabilizer must not be manufactured with lead or cadmium to keep industries that use them safe.

2. Testing Requirements

Now, even if your products are guaranteed not to contain those hazardous chemicals listed above, manufacturers must be able to provide test reports proving that no chemicals are present.

There are various testing methods with the first being the X-ray Fluorescence test. This test can be conducted using bench-top or handheld analyzers, with portable handheld analyzers used initially to check high-risk parts.

Advanced RoHS compliance submissions require extra testing that must be done inside a real RoHS testing lab. Usually, these involve the extraction of solvents followed by evaluation using Gas Chromatography to ensure the non-existence of those harmful chemicals.

3. Labeling Requirements

This is where the RoHS CE marking enters the scene. Keep in mind that RoHS compliance is sometimes a pre-requisite to obtain CE marking.

In other words, products covered under the RoHS directive must also bear the CE marking, ensuring that, if there are restricted substances detected and there is no way to cancel them, they are within limits.

Thus, these labels must be placed with these indications:

  • Product identification (Type, batch, or serial number)
  • Manufacturer or importer information (Name, registered trade name, address, and contact information)

Today, the CE mark is the symbol that says the product has complied with RoHS requirements.

Where to Obtain Your RoHS Certificate?

Once you have satisfied all those requirements, getting RoHS-certified will just be easy. There are three steps that must be satisfied:

  • Step 1: Testing
  • Step 2: Process audits
  • Step 3: Review of documents

The testing must be done in a certified RoHS testing lab, the process audits require on-site inspection, and the document review involves the Bill of Materials, Technical File, assembly drawings, supplier certificates, and other relevant papers.
